Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a condition that becomes apparent in some children in the preschool and early school years. It is hard for these children with ADHD to control their behavior and/or pay attention. It is estimated that between 3 and 5 percent of children have ADHD, or approximately 2 million children in the United States. This means that in a classroom of 25 to 30 children, it is likely that at least one will have ADHD.

Medical Approach to ADHD / ADD

ADHD Medications: Drugs known as psychostimulants are the most commonly prescribed medications for treating ADHD in children and adults. Commonly used psychostimulants include:

  • Methylphenidate (Ritalin, Concerta)
  • Dextroamphetamine/amphetamine (Adderall)
  • Dextroamphetamine (Dexedrine)

Side Effects:

ADHD stimulant medications may be associated with a slightly reduced growth rate in children who take them, although in most cases growth isn't permanently affected. The non-stimulant medication Strattera has been linked to side effects that include rare liver problems. Adderall has raised concerns because of reports of sudden unexplained deaths in children taking the medication. Dextroamphetamine has raised concerns because sudden deaths in youngsters with heart abnormalities have occurred. The drug may also cause troubling psychological side effects, such as delusional thoughts or hallucinations. It is easy to see how ADHD treatment can become very complex.

As NUCCA Chiropractors, the approach to get to the cause and un-stress the body and get to the cause is always the first action by our office. ADD/ADHD is very often over diagnosed. Children are expected to be active and busy. With that said, there are behaviors that ADHD create need to be addressed. Our thought is to be conservative with the ADHD child. We think medication need not be the first line of resolution for ADHD. As NUCCA Chiropractors, the nervous system and the endocrine system are both evaluated in our office before anything else. Through spinal balance and nutritional shifts which require family compliance, non-invasive approaches can be extremely successful with the ADHD child.

ADHD Helped With Chiropractic, A Case Study

In the October 2004 issue of the peer-reviewed research publication, the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics (JMPT), comes a case study of a child with ADHD (Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder), who was helped with chiropractic. The case was of a 5 year old boy who had been diagnosed with ADHD at age 2. The child's pediatrician prescribed methylphenidate (Ritalin), Adderall, and Haldol for the next 3 years. The combination of ADHD drugs was unsuccessful in helping the child.

At age 5, the ADHD child was brought to a chiropractor to see if chiropractic care would help with his symptoms. The history taken at that time noted that during the child's birth, there were complications during his delivery process. The results of this trauma and complications resulted in a 4–day stay in the neonatal intensive care unit. The child's mother reported no other incidence of trauma. The chiropractic examination and x-rays showed noticeable spinal distortion including a reversal of the normal neck curve indicative of subluxations. Chiropractic care was begun and the ADHD child's progress was monitored.

According to his mother, positive changes in her son's general behavior were noticed around the twelfth chiropractic treatment. By the 27th chiropractic treatment the ADHD patient had experienced considerable improvement. The child was brought by the mother to the medical doctor for a follow up visit and questioned the usage of the Ritalin. The medical doctor reviewed and examined the child and based on that assessment and his clinical experience, the MD felt that the young boy was no longer exhibiting symptoms associated with ADHD. He then took the boy off the ADHD medications that he had been taking for 3 years.

The conclusion of the author of the JMPT case study noted, "The patient experienced significant reduction in the symptoms of ADHD. Additionally, the medical doctor concluded that the reduction in symptoms was significant enough to discontinue the medication."
