How the NUCCA Chiropractic Method Can Help You

Fibromyalgia is a non–life–threatening, chronic disorder of the muscles and related soft tissue, including ligaments and tendons. An injury or trauma, particularly in the upper spinal region, may trigger the development of fibromyalgia in some people.

Fibromyalgia is often regarded as a medical enigma. Symptoms of fibromyalgia syndrome can overlap with other conditions making it difficult to diagnose. Muscle pain, either throughout the body or only at certain points, is the primary symptom of fibromyalgia. A related, key aspect of fibromyalgia is the presence of "tender points," muscles and tendons that are tender when pressed. People with fibromyalgia also feel moderately to severely fatigued and have sleep problems, including insomnia. Many people describe fibromyalgia as feeling like a persistent flu.

Medical Approach to Fibromyalgia

No single treatment will take away all the symptoms associated with fibromyalgia. But most people do get some relief by trying a combination of therapies. Here are some of the medical treatment options your doctor may offer:

  • Lyrica: This is the first drug approved by the FDA specifically for the treatment of fibromyalgia. While this is a step forward, it is no cure. Lyrica has been shown to cut pain levels in half, but only in 30% of the people who took it.
  • Low doses of antidepressant medication: These medicines improve sleep and decreases fibromyalgia pain as well as eliminate depression.
  • Biofeedback and relaxation techniques: Besides lessening pain, these alternative therapies also decrease the number of tender points.
  • Acupuncture: Multiple studies have shown that acupuncture can decrease tender point pain in fibromyalgia patients.
  • Tender point injections: A steroid injection into a painful area may provide temporary relief of fibromyalgic pain.
  • Massage therapy: This can help relax and soothe painful muscles.
  • S-adenosyl methionine (SAMe): A small group of studies shows that this supplement may be helpful.

Fibromylagia is a syndrome that from long term spinal misalignment that results in decreased oxygenation and trigger muscle points as well as central nervous system pressure. As in all chronic processes a system to restore structuaral integrity and overall body empowerment is necessary to provide relief from the symptoms of fibromyalgia.

As NUCCA chiropractors, our office uses a three phase treatment protocol to improve the effects of fibromyalgia. They include correcting the spine a neutral position. This unstresses the nervous system and relaxes the musculoskeletal system associated with fibromyalgia. Each patient is evaluated and a protocol of nutrition, exercise, and emotional rehab is initiated. This treatment system is effective but takes a level of long term commitment to resolve the underlying cause of fibromyalgia.

Fibromyalgia & Chiropractic : Study

OBJECTIVE

The aim of the study was to evaluate the short-term and 1–year follow-up results of connective tissue manipulation and combined ultrasound (US) therapy (US and high-voltage pulsed galvanic stimulation) in terms of pain, complaint of non-restorative sleep, and impact on the functional activities in patients with fibromyalgia (FM).

METHODS

This is an observational prospective cohort study of 20 female patients with fibromyalgia. Intensity of pain, complaint of non-restorative sleep, and impact of fibromyalgia on functional activities were evaluated by visual analogue scales. All evaluations were performed before and after 20 sessions of treatment, which included connective tissue manipulation of the back daily, for a total of 20 sessions, and combined US therapy of the upper back region every other session. One-year follow-up evaluations were performed on 14 subjects. The Friedman test was used to analyze time–dependent changes.

RESULTS

Statistical analyses revealed that pain intensity, impact of fibromyalgia on functional activities, and complaints of non-restorative sleep improved after the chiropractic treatment program (P <.05).

CONCLUSION

Methods used in this study seemed to be helpful in improving pain intensity, complaints of non-restorative sleep, and impact on functional activities in patients with fibromyalgia.
