Shoulder and neck pain is pain that occurs anywhere from the bottom of the head to the top of the shoulders and may spread to the upper back or upper arms. It may feel like a "kink," stiffness, or severe pain, and may result in limited neck movement as well as numbness into the arm and hand. This is usually a sign of pressure on a nerve or disc. It can stem from a number of direct causes. One of the most prevalent causes of neck pain, or shoulder pain, is apparent when the skull is tilted and one shoulder is higher than another. This visual misalignment is a clear indicator of stress on the upper spine can cause the muscles surrounding the neck to spasm and the nerves existing in the spinal cord to inflame.

Medical Approach to Shoulder and Neck Pain

Neck pain is usually treated with pain medications, exercise, and changing activities and body mechanics. Physical therapy, ultimately steroid shots may be prescribed if the pain persists. In case of long term pain management narcotics, nerve blocks and possibly surgery are the only medical avenues for long term care.

  • Pain medications: Usually in the form of acetaminophen (Tylenol) with or without an anti-inflammatory medicine such as ibuprofen (Advil) or naproxen (Aleve). It may take several days to settle the pain down. Stronger narcotic-containing medicines are usually not necessary, but your doctor may provide these for the first few days.
  • For shoulder pain, Immobilization: Possibly a splint, cast, or sling. It is very important to follow your doctor's instructions regarding the use of these devices, particularly when it is advised to discontinue the use and begin moving the area.

The NUCCA Approach to Shoulder and Neck Pain

The NUCCA Chiropractor understands that the cause of the nerve or disc entrapment and inflammation associated with neck pain is a direct cause to a spinal misalignment. Chronic back, shoulder and neck pain can take years of nerve irritation and spinal misalignment to develop.

As the skull misaligns, the neck is loaded off balance and the discs are weighted asymmetrically. The neck muscles are then recruited to hold up the skull. Over long periods, the neck muscles fatigue, spasm and the nerves in the neck become inflamed thus causing the neck pain.

As a NUCCA Chiropractor, our approach is to correct the cause of the underlying trouble. Correcting the balance of the skull restores the neck and spinal column to a neutral position that relaxes the muscles, reduces the stress to the spinal column, and ultimately initiates the healing process.

Neck pain, shoulder pain & Chiropractic

"In our randomized, controlled trial, we compared the effectiveness of manual therapy, physical therapy, and continued care by a general practitioner in patients with nonspecific neck pain. The success rate at seven weeks was twice as high for the manual therapy group (68.3 percent) as for the continued care group (general practitioner). Manual therapy scored better than physical therapy on all outcome measures. Patients receiving manual therapy had fewer absences from work than patients receiving physical therapy or continued care, and manual therapy and physical therapy each resulted in statistically significant less analgesic use than continued care."
