Numbness and tingling are abnormal sensations that can occur anywhere in your body, but are often felt in your hands, feet, arms, or legs. Alternative Names are "Sensory loss; Parethesias; Tingling and numbness; Loss of sensation" Common Causes are:

Numbness: Arms, Hands, Legs, Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS)

  • Remaining in the same seated or standing position for a long time
  • Injury to a nerve — for example, a neck injury may cause you to feel numbness anywhere along your arm or hand, while a low back injury can cause numbness or tingling down the back of your leg
  • Pressure on the spinal nerves such as that due to a herniated disk
  • Lack of blood supply to an area — for example, plaque buildup from atherosclerosis in the legs can cause pain, numbness and tingling while walking (this is called vascular claudication)
  • Other medical conditions, including:
    • Carpal tunnel syndrome
    • Diabetes
    • Migraines
    • Multiple sclerosis
    • Seizures
    • Stroke
    • Transient ischemic attack (TIA)
    • Underactive thyroid
  • Abnormal levels of calcium, potassium, or sodium in your body
  • A lack of vitamin B12 or other vitamin
  • Certain medications
  • Toxic action on nerves, such as that from lead, alcohol, or tobacco
  • Radiation therapy

Medical Approach to Numbness & Carpal Tunnel

Treatment of paresthesias depends on the underlying cause. For limbs that have "fallen asleep," restoring circulation by stretching, exercising, or massaging the affected limb can quickly dissipate the numbness and tingling. If the paresthesia is caused by a chronic disease such as diabetes or occurs as a complication of treatments such as chemotherapy, most treatments are aimed at relieving symptoms. Anti–inflammatory drugs such as aspirin or ibuprofen are recommended if symptoms are mild. In more difficult cases, antidepressant drugs such as amitriptyline (Elavil) are sometimes prescribed. These drugs are given at a much lower dosage for this purpose than for relief of depression. They are thought to help because they alter the body's perception of pain. In severe cases, opium derivatives such as codeine can be prescribed. Currently trials are being done to determine whether treatment with human nerve growth factor will be effective in regenerating the damaged nerves.(1)

NUCCA's approach is always to resolve the underlying cause of the symptom and to allow the body to heal. Paresthesias or numbness can be caused by a number of stressors. Inflammation and a protruding disc are probably the leading causes of nerve pressure. The NUCCA procedure balances the spinal column and skull to alleviate this stress and allow for the healing process to be optimized.

NUCCA is the only procedure that measures the relationship between the skull, cervical one, and cervical two to the pelvis with film and the anatometer. This method restores optimal function to the nervous system and relieves stress to the musculo-skeletal system.

This procedure by creating balance reduces the asymmetrical load on the discs which initiates a reduction in inflammation naturally by the body.

Numbness / Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) & Chiropractic : Study

Dr. Susan MacKinnon professor of surgery at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis in a study of 64 patients with repetitive stress disorders of whom 34 had wrist surgery it was discovered that wrist pain or discomfort was not the only symptom the patients complained of. Most patients had multiple problems, especially muscle imbalance. The high failure rate of surgery has caused her to rethink the cause of CTS: "Unnatural postures for extended periods creating pressure on the nerves in the neck, leading to neurological and other symptoms...even when extremity surgery improves the peripheral symptoms such as numbness in the hands, other associated problems like neck stiffness and shoulder pain persist," her article states.(2)
